A colleague recently asked me to go to a site called thispersondoesnotexist.com. I clicked on the link, and what came up was a photograph of a person—refreshing the link brought up more people. So why was this special? Who were these people? The answers: exceptional and no one. These people do not exist in real life. They are AI-generated images based on a type of machine learning called generative adversarial networks (GANs). I’m both thrilled and uneasy about this, and I’ll write about why in another blog after I’ve more time to think about it.
